Euclid - Father of Geometry(biography)
In the Greek language Euclid name was Euclidus. He have
studied in the academy of Plato. In those days Plato academy was very
famous for the Math. Due to the
political instability Euclid have reach to Alexandria. Euclid was considered as
the father of Geometry. At 300 B.C Euclid collect all the information about
geometry and arrange them in order and wrote 13 books about Geometry.This book
were considered as the major elements of Euclid. From this collection he was
considered as the great mathematician.
About 2500 years ago Euclid have formulated the law of Geometry.
Still in the primary level geometry were taught to student which are on the
basis of Euclid collection. Euclid and geometry were the synonyms of each
other. And the volume of books written by Euclid was very precious for self and
whole world. Though only books were available we can only said that he used to
live in Alexandria before 300 B.C. During the reign of Tolemy he live in
Alexandria . He open one school and complete his Volume. Greek ruler Tolemy was
a great scholar. He always respect poet, actor, astrologers and mathematician.
He have collected about 7 lakh books in his library.
Those books were written
in the special types of paper obtained from cellulose. Due to the various
changes in time those library doesn't came into existence.
The book written by Euclid was named Stoichia. Later it was
named Elevantus. This volume have altogether 13 parts. In first part
introduction of points, line, area, triangle etc. Next parts includes the
calculation of geometrical shape by graphical mathematics. Third and fourth
book includes the information about the perimeter. Fifth and sixth books
contain the formula of area and volumes. Seventh , eight, and ninth book
contains Arithmetic. Eleventh, twelve and thirteenth books contains the
calculation of solid shapes. In those books there is the information about
cylinder, pyramid, cone, cube, sphere etc.
Euclid collect all the research work
of Thales, Pythagoras, Plato and other Greek and Arabian scientist. Euclid
doesn't discover all the Geometric
formula but he collect all the information of geometry and arrange them in a
volume. He add new concept and make the geometry more practical and simple. He
add simple definition with the mathematical form so that it can be proven by
statement. Plato have understand the important of geometry. In order to take
admission in his academy everyone should have basic concept of Geometry. He
have said that people who don't have knowledge about geometry were not allowed
to enter the Academy.
Abraham Lincoln also have accepted the important of Geometry.
At the age of 40 years he studied about the geometry from Euclid volume. This
studied were not to be perfect in Math but to improve the quality of statement.
The study of Mechanics, Sound, Optics,
Nuclear physics, Bio science etc were possible only by the application of
Euclid mathematic collection. The new discovery in science also depends on
Euclid system.
At 6th century Euclid volume were translated into Syrian
language. During 8th century it is translated into Arabian language. This
volume were translated in India too. Beside this it is translated in Latin American
and many other language. How this volume
of Euclid have played vital role in flourishing the Geometry for the last 2300 years ago. Nobody can explain it. Those
geometry include in this volume were well known as the Euclidian geometry.
A German mathematician Riemann develops a new geometry called
A-Euclidia Geometry on the basis this volume. The world famous scientist like
Einstein also use this geometry to formulated his famous theory og Relativity.
Einstein have written many articles about the greatness of Euclid. There were
rare mathematician who were in the rank with Euclid. He was not forgotten in
the coming generation for many centuries. His work is not limited in math but
also overall development of optics.
