Beijing , the world largest city
Beijing the capital of people's Republic of China is one of the world's oldest and largest cities. It is China's main political, cultural and education centre. Today, with its suburbs it has a population of over 6 million. There are many industries ,including iron steel,machinery, textiles and petrochemicals. Beijing, founded 2000 years ago, is situated in northern China about 160km inland from the Yellow Sea. The first settlement on the site was called Chi. It was the capital of the state of Yen in the 12th century B.C. In the 13 th century ,the mongols under Kublai Khan invaded China and made the city their capital. He called it Khanbaliq. In the 14th century the city was named Peiping. It became the capital of Ming dynasty in 1421 and was called Peking. It was called Peiping again from 1928 to 1949 when Nanking was China's capital under the Nationalist ( Guomindang) government. From 1937 until 1945 Peiping was occupied by the Japanese. It became the capital of the people's Republic of China on 1 October 1949 and was renamed Peking. Today it is known as Beijing. The Nei Cheng ( inner city) of Beijing is the oldest part. There are many temples and houses in the inner city. Two other cities are found in Beijing. The Imperial City contains the offices of the government. Within the Imperial City is the Forbidden City (Gu Gong) where the original imperial palaces stan Also part of the forbidden city are the Tien An Men ( Gate of Heavenly peace),the Chungsan (Sun yatsen) park and the Imperial ancestral temple, which serves as the People's Cultural Palace and recreation ground. The Wai Cheng (Outer City) is located to the south of the Inner City. It contains shops,officies,and the main railway station. Beijing has museums of Chinese history and of the Chinese revolution. The Great Hall of people(1959) is used for the official banquets. The world's largest four waiting rooms are in Beijing railway station. They have a total standing capacity of 14000. Beijing has three Universities Tsinghua University, people's University, Beijing University (oldest ) and many specialised colleges.
