Mercury is the closest planet to the sun. It is at a distance of 5.8x10^7km from the sun. It is also the smallest planet of the solar system having a diameter 4851.2km. As mercury is closer to the sun ,it is very difficult to watch this planet even with the help of a telescope. Mercury is the fastest revolving planet around the sun. The period of rotation around its own axis is about 59 days and the period of revolution around the sun is approximately 88 days. The surface temperature of mercury is extremely hot during the day and extremely cold during the night because there is absence of atmospheric greenhouse in this planet. The temperature varies between 427°C to - 170°C. It is almost like the moon in its features as it has deep craters and shadowy phases. The craters on the surface of mercury are huge pits formed due to the impact of large masses of rocks in the past. It has no satellites.
