Melbourne, capital of the state of Victoria, is the second largest city of Australia. Located on Port Philip Bay, near the mouth of the Yarra River, it is one of Australia's leading ports. Exports include dairy products, wool and scrap metal. 
    Melbourne has a population of over 3,200,000. It is a major commercial, cultural and industrial center. The city's factories produce a wide range of products, including aeroplanes, automobiles, textiles, machinery, electronics, chemicals and processed food.
   Melbourne has several museums, an art gallery, New Arts Center of Victoria and a large library. Three Universities Melbourne, Monash and Latrobe are located in or near the city. Other notable buildings include the State Parliament House and the Anglican and Roman Catholic Cathedrals. games. 
   Melbourne was founded in 1835 on a small settlement which had earlier existed in the area. In 1837 it was named after Lord Melbourne who was the British Prime Minister at the time. After the 1851 rush for gold, it developed rapidly. It became the capital of commonwealth of Australia when the country obtained independence in 1901 and remained the seat of government until 1927.
