Do you know who invented Basketball?

basketball

Basketball is a game played between two teams of five players each. It is one of the most popular spectator sports in the United States and is the only major sport of North American origin. Basketball was invented by a Canadian, James Naismith. He worked as an instructor at the young Men's Christian Association Training School, at Springfield Massachusetts. His students were bored with the usual gymnasium activities. This prompted Naismith to make up a game that would sustain the interest of the students as well as teach them sportsmanship and healthy living. Naismith first hung empty peach baskets from the school's gymnasium to throw the ball. Later holes were punched in the bottoms so the ball could fall through. In 1892 , a basket of woven wire was tried , but soon they found the hammock- style basket , which is in use now. Very soon the game gained popularity and spread all over. The game is played on a rectangular court. Its measurements depends on where the game is played. The court is equipped with a hoop or basket on either side on a stand. The rim of the basket is ten feet from the playing floor. The game needs little special euipment. It requires indoor or outdoor area large enough for a court, two baskets, and a ball. Generally - Men's team is of five players, whereas womens team is of six players. Basketball is a game of exceptional speed and skill. Tall players are generally preferred. In 1936 it became an Olympic Sport.
