Golden lesson from an Idiom

It is too late to lock the stable when the horse has been stolen. It means it is useless to take precautions after something has happened that could have been foreseen and guarded agai. Its French version is , 'After the death, the doctor'. Once Mr John gave his son an expensive piece of art made of crystal glass. He had to yield to his son's pestering to hold it just once in his hand and see. After putting the piece of art in his son's hand, John left the room to attend an errand. When he turned his back, he heard a thud and rushed into the room only to see the crystal glass piece lying shattered in pieces. Furious over this, he slapped his son and said thereafter, he should never ask for any such things carefully. What do you call this? Is it not locking the stable after the horse left? The same thing may be applicable to the opportunities we miss out and regret later.
