Halitosis : Bad breath embarrassing !


Bad breadth which causes lot of embarrassment to the person concern as well as those around , is scientifically known as Halitosis. This common disorder, which is found in many people is a sign of illness. In most cases, those who suffer from this disorder are unaware of this and the discomfort they causes to others.

What causes Halitosis?

The most common cause of halitosis is bad teeth and gum condition. The decaying teeth may result in abscesses in the gums. The put that forms around gives bad odour to the breadth. Sometimes small holes in the teeth might also breed germs that multiply and release bad smell. Certain nasal , throat, respiratory tract or stomach infections known as tonsillitis, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, chronic gastritis and sinuses, which causes a discharge at the back of the throat can also cause halitosis. One of the major causes is gastrointestinal disorders, indigestion, and constipation. Besides anaemia , chewing pan, tobacco and smoking also are the other causes of bad breath. Halitosis is preventable. the first remedy being well-balanced diet which consists of lots of vegetables, grains,nuts, seeds and fruits, with lot of importance to raw and cooked vegetables. Constipation, one of the causes of halitosis, can be avoided by reducing the intake of refined carbohydrate foods such as white sugar, white bread and products made from them. Even wholegrain bread should be eaten sparingly. The patient should also take plenty of liquids and drink six to eight glasses of water a day. This will help eliminate bad breath. The liquid intake includes fruit juices from fruits like apple , grape, lemon , pineapple and vegetables like tomato and carrot and celery. There are some home remedies too. The use of Fenugreek seeds and vegetables will be effective. Dental hygiene is very helpful. The teeth should be cleaned twice a day especially, before going to bed at night. In case of decaying teeth and bleeding gums, one should consult a dentist immediately. Chewing of a raw apple or guava after lunch is helpful. They remove most of the trapped particles in the mouth. Especially, the unripe guava is useful in halitosis. It is rich in tannic, malic, oxalic and phosphoric acids as well as calcium, oxalate and manganese. Chewing it is an excellent tonic for the teeth and gums. Chewing tender leaves of a guava tree also stops bleeding from gums and bad breath.
