They change them into acids causing bad breath. These acids now attack the enamel and bore cavities into the tooth. Gradually the tooth begins to give pain. And the cavity, if not filled by the Dentist, goes deeper and reaches the nerves. The decay then reaches the root of the tooth causing severe pain. Bacteria also enters the bloodstream spreading infection. Finally the damaged tooth has to be removed. Besides tooth decay, plaque also poses a grave problems to the gums. If not removed through regular brushing, plaque leads to formation of tartar. This gradually hardens around the gumline. Plaque also loosens the firm contact between gums and teeth making a way for tartar to creep in and irritate the gums. This causes inflammation and swelling. Gums may even bleed while you brush. Later on , gums and bone may begins to shrink and even healthy teeth may loosen and fall out Unhealthy gums could also spread infection to other parts of the body through the blood-stream. Most patients go to the dentist at a stage when their teeth need to be extracted. But regular visits, preferably once in every six months , can prevent several problems. Regular brushing is the most important step to ensure dental health. Brushing twice a day in the right way helps to keep plaque off your teeth and gums. Gums too need daily exercise. Take a little tooth- paste on your finger and gently message your teeth. This will help proper blood circulation and the gums will be firm and healthy. Teeth and gums need a regular chewing and biting. Crisp fruit and vegetables like apple, guava , cucumber , radish and carrot and fibrous substances like sugarcane gives oral exercise and helps in cleaning the teeth. Proteins, vitamins and minerals help to build strong teeth and gums and keep them healthy. Your diet should include plenty of fruits, green vegetables and milk. Sweets turn into acids causing damage to enamel. Eat sweets in moderation and rinse your mouth every time you eat sweets. Tongue forms a source for oral bacteria to breed and multiply. The tongue needs to be cleaned regularly. Don't pick your teeth with pins and needles. Use a wooden toothpick or dental floss. Do not neglect irregular teeth. They affect your speech, chewing of food and brushing of teeth. Childhood is the best time to get them corrected.
