Mosquito Fish

The fish Gambusia affinis is a native of Central America. It is popularly known as the mosquito fish because of its foundation for mosquito larvae. Taking advantage of this useful trait, it has been used through out the tropical world to control malaria spreading mosquitoes.

In India these colourful fish were introduced into most cities in the early part of this century. Though it inhabits flowing streams in the wild, it is most adaptable and can survive in stagnant and partially polluted water.

The female of the species grows to about 8cm and is more in number. The males have an average length of about 2.5cm and are beautifully coloured.
