The Story of Famous actress who became saint

actress

An actress , known for her priceless jewellery and the daring nature of her stage roles which surprised Paris audiences, became a Saint. She was Eve Lavalliere, famous French actress. Beautiful and rich , she was the idol of the Paris stage. Born in Toulon in 1868 as Eugenie Feneglie, she was an orphan and tried to earn her living as a singer in cafes. People liked her singing and told her she should try her luck in Paris. She went to Paris poor and nameless. A manager gave the little girl a part and all Paris loved her. Fame and fortune paved her way with gold and flowers. Distinguished people cultivated her friendship. Great men requested her to interpret their plays. She was beautiful with a crown of curls and great shining eyes. She had grace of body and movement and was extremely intelligent. Admiration followed her everywhere. Her photographs appeared constantly. Articles were written about her clothes and about her art. One day in 1917, she suddenly disappeared and all efforts to persuade her to return failed. Her dazzling life had brought her no happiness. At first, like every stage – struck girl, she had thought it would be splendid to be famous. She had been as pleased with her jewels as a child with its toys. But soon she was asking: “ Is this all? When shall I begin to be happy?” In the end she left the world and set out in quest of happiness. What extraordinary change had taken place in her life , will , perhaps, never be known: but this beautiful and worldly woman was transformed into pious and self-sacrificing lay-sister devoting her life to almost unceasing prayer and to the service of the sick and needy. Eve Lavalliere sought to become a nun but her desire to enter a convent was frustrated by ill – health. She roamed the unfamiliar places of the Earth in repentance for her faults. No longer wealthy , for she had given her jewellery and all she possessed to charity, she made her way to North Africa, where she devoted her days to the nursing of sick and poverty-stricken persons. If a poor man needed nursing or a sick woman wanted her house scrubbed or a dying child wanted comfort, she was there to serve. Eve Lavalliere became an elderly , worn out saint. She denied herself all comforts and in the intervals of serving the sick , spent her remaining hours on her knees, praying for forgiveness for the follies of her earlier life. Later , Eve Lavalliere returned to France , the land of her birth. She firmly resisted all persuasion to go back to the haunts of her youth or even to receive her friends of earlier days. She had found the secret in living for others . She passed away in 1929.
